History
Rose-Eden House was built in 1876 by Mr. Phillip Trelore Hill who was the local Headmaster of the Goolwa Primary School from 1873 until 1884. Mr Hill and his wife used to take in children as boarders from outer areas so they could attend school and get an education. In 1886 Mr Hill sold the property then known as Hygiene House.
It then passed to various owners until in 1913 bought by the Minister of Education and used as a residence for the future Headmasters of the School. The Minister of Education continued to own the house for a further 60 years before being sold in 1973.
The house then stayed in the same hands for another 30 years and in October 2005, the house was purchased by us and we have extensively brought back to life the beautiful House and Gardens and renamed it Rose-Eden House.
We have turned the house into 4 executive suites and named each suite after a former Headmaster who lived in the House:
Hill Suite after Mr Phillip Trelore Hill, Headmaster 1873 to 1884
Hartnett Suite after Mr Thomas Hartnett, Headmaster 1916 to 1926
Coghlan Suite after Mr Ambrose Coghlan, Headmaster 1927 to 1937
McHugh Suite after Mr Albert Hill, Headmaster 1944 to 1949
On laying new pipes in the garden, we came across various ink bottles and assorted items which are now on display in the House in the cabinet at left.
Fascinating Goolwa
The name "Goolwa" means "elbow" in Ngarrindjeri, the local Aboriginal language.
Goolwa is approximately 100 km south of Adelaide and has a population of approximately 6,000.
